The board is the group of people who make the big decisions and set the overall direction of the school.
The school board is responsible for:
policies and procedures
planning for the future
employing all school staff
complying with the law
managing budgets.
The board doesn't get involved in operational issues. The principal is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school. boards are accountable for student achievement. They exercise this prime accountability by providing strategic direction for the delivery of quality educational outcomes. They are responsible for ensuring that they focus their strategic planning on improving student achievement and teaching and learning programmes.
The school board has overall responsibility for the school, including certain legal obligations covering property, personnel the proper management of school finances, reporting to the ministry and school community.
The charter is the key guiding document for the board and outlines the strategic direction goals and aspirations of the school.
The Board of Trustees at Westmere School comprises of 6 elected parent representatives, an elected staff representative and the Principal.
From time to time, the Board may co-opt a trustee. Co-opted Trustees may be appointed for a specific time or purpose, to support the Board in meeting its goals and aspirations. Because of the unique nature of the relationship between Ngā Uri O Ngā Iwi and the School, the Board regularly co-opts additional representation from the whānau parent group to ensure a strong Treaty relationship exists with the tangata whenua at Westmere School.
At Westmere School, half of the parent representatives are elected every 18 months for a three-year term. This is called a midterm election. This helps with succession planning and continuity of Board operations.
Parent representatives (parent trustees) are elected by the parents and caregivers of the school. Members of the wider community are eligible to stand for election but must be nominated by someone on the school's parent roll.
Parent trustees are full members of the board and are there to bring a parent perspective to the board. They are not parent advocates, nor do they need to vote in accordance with the wishes of the community. They are privy to much more information than other parents and must vote in the best interests of all students. An elected parent representative can be the board presiding member.
